BLOG FOR JULY, 2019

I want to write this July blog on the subject of HOPE.    The Bible says that it abides in the spirit of the believer, and I find that to be one of the greatest blessings that we claim and live by.  Just this past month it has again come to my rescue while ill, in the form of the old song, The Rubber Tree Plant.  Every time I would want to get a pity party going, that song would pop up in my mind and I would think its words even though too weak and sick to sing them!

Just what make that little ole ant

Think he’ll move a rubber tree plant?

Anyone knows an ant can’t

Move a rubber tree plant!

But he has high hope!

He’s got high hopes!  He’s got high apple pie in the sky hopes!

So anytime you’re feelin’ blue, just remember that ant!

Oops!   There goes another rubber tree plant…..

Then as I would begin to feel a little bit better the problem I was having would recur and then again, Hope would pop up in the form of Emily Dickinson’s definition of the word, which has always stayed with me when in deep waters!  I absolutely love her words and love to pass them on to others for encouragement.  Hope is that feathered thing that perches on the soul and sings the song with no words, and never stops—at all.

I am so glad for those  two last words—at all, because I hate to think what would happen if he stopped singing for even a few minutes!  I am quite sure the spiritual results would be disastrous.  The Lord certainly knows all about the human spirit and He knows that we absolutely would curl up and die, if that bird stopped his singing for a second.  I always want to turn the dark clouds inside out and where would I be without the feathered friend who is abiding there?  I shudder to think.

When I was little sometimes my big sister who was my caretaker in the big family, and she would be crying about something that I was too young to understand, so she could not unload it on to me, but I would sit down by her and say, “Don’t cry, ” Then I would say, “Do you want me to sing to you?’ She would say “No.”  So I would sir there and be quiet and wait for her to get back to herself and then she would turn and smile at me, and say, “Mac, I can’t wait until you are a big girl and then I can tell you about the things that trouble me, but for now, you are too little to understand, so I am still glad I have you to look after, for you are always someone who cares, and I do love you for waiting with me.”

So I was born with that little feathered friend perched on my soul singing away, and never stopping—at all.

And by the way, I did grow up and by the time I was 16, that sister and I were bosom friends who shared every secret and double dated, then she married and I was still single, but both of them kept me under their wings and saved me, during the Great Depression, when I was out on my own and still needed family and big sister to counsel and to help me over the rough spots!  I took my dates to her house and she entertained them and some she liked, and others were just so-so, but she was there for me.  All of my big sisters mothered me, but it was my caretaker who remained that, and kept me under her wings, all of her life, and many was the time when I was plenty glad that I could be the one who cheered her up or again, I was the one she could confide in and keep her listening to the little feathered friend who was perched on her soul and was singing the song with no words.

When I say that my life motto is LOOK UP, LAUGH, LOVE AND LIFT, I consider the first one which is an optimistic outlook of hope and faith.  I will always do my best to cheer the gloom and doom people, and give every reason to be looking up and in that attempt I have meditated on the word OPTIMISM  and allowed the Lord to give me a new way to spell the word so that I can nearly always bat a thousand with this one, and I can bring the smile with this one that the Lord showed me!  A new way to spell the word and this is it for anyone reading this with a case of the doldrums and need to get back to normal!  Spell the word with two “T” s instead of just one.  OPT-TIM-ISM.  THINK OF IT THIS WAY. OPT MEANS TO CHOOSE, TIM IS ABBREVIATED FORM OF TIMOTHY, AND ISM MEANS A DOCTRINE   SO LITERALLY “CHOOSE TIMOTHY DOCTRINE WHICH IS “UNFEIGNED FAITH:”

When one adds that extra letter to the spelling of that word, optimism, it makes all the difference.  I LOVE IT!  AND THE LORD GAVE THAT TO ME WHEN I WAS MEDITATING ON THE WORD AND ASKING HIM HOW I COULD MAGNIFY IT IN PEOPLE’S MINDS AND UP POPPED THAT EXTRA T.

BE SURE TO KEEP THAT IN MIND AND KNOW THAT THE LORD IS PLEASED WHEN YOU MENTALLY INSERT THAT EXTRA T AND TAKE THE TIME TO CHUCKLE. That will be your LAUGH, and then we come to the word, LOVE, and since that one happens to be a commandment of the Lord, we will not need to add anything to it, for it is something that the Lord has personified for us in His Life story which through His power has been preserved for us in the New Testament.  Here we have the story of His miraculous birth, then his childhood is summed up in the story of His journey to Jerusalem when He was 12, and then his three years of ministry  His sacrificial death, His Resurrection and the proof of it that He allowed, His Ascension, and then the Gift of His Holy Spirit in all the believers.    This is the source of LOVE for each believer, which gives the power to each believer to LIFT THE SAVIOR UP AND THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE CAN BE OFFERED TO EVERYONE IN THE WORLD.

THUS I CAN FREELY CLAIM THAT THESE FOUR WORDS HAVE BECOME MY LIFE’S MOTTO, AND I GLADLY SHARE THEM WITH ALL.

THROUGH THESE FOUR WORDS I AM ABLE TO SAY, I WILL DO THE BEST I CAN, WHERE I AM, WITH WHAT I HAVE, FOR JESUS’ SAKE TODAY!  THIS WAS THE VBS MOTTO ONE YEAR WHEN I WAS THE PRINCIPAL AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH THAT IT STAYED WITH ME ALL THESE YEARS! I share these thoughts with those who follow these blogs.  I KNOW THAT YOU ARE WITH ME IN PROCLAIMING THAT HOPE ABIDES! AND ONE HAS TO READ NO FURTHER THAN GENESIS 1:1 TO SEE THAT GOD HIMSELF IS OUR HOPE!   IN THE BEGINNING GOD….   ALL OF THE OPENING CHAPTER WILL CAUSE US TO SING, “OH, GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST, OUR HOPE IN YEARS TO COME!  OUR SHELTER FROM THE STORMY BLAST, AND OUR ETERNAL HOME!
